چکیده

The terms renormalization and renormalization group are explained by reference to various physical systems. The extension of renormalization group to turbulence is then discussed; first as a comprehensive review and second concentrating on the technical details of a few selected approaches. We conclude with a discussion of the relevance and application of renormalization group to turbulence modelling. Dr. R. Rubinstein contributed Sec. 6. This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS119480.

Investigation of Renormalization Group Methods for the Numerical Simulation of Isotropic Turbulence

INTRODUCTION Over the years, our research into turbulence at Edinburgh has concentrated on the application of renormalization methods to the prediction of the energy spectrum of isotropic turbulence. General discussions of this work will be found elsewhere (McComb 1990, 1995), while accounts of specific progress have been given previously in this conference series (McComb & Shanmugasundaram 198...

RG Analysis of the Kolmogorov Cascade in Isotropic Turbulence

We review the application of renormalization group (RG) methods to the problem of isotropic turbulence, with attention to Kolmogorov’s phenomenological scaling law. We see that RG reproduces the form of the 5/3 law and can also be used to obtain estimates of the Kolmogorov constant that agree with experiment and numerical simulation. The articles reviewed also confirm the universality of the sc...

Nonperturbative renormalization group approach to turbulence

We suggest a new, renormalization group (RG) based, nonperturbative method for treating the intermittency problem of fully developed turbulence which also includes the effects of a finite boundary of the turbulent flow. The key idea is not to try to construct an elimination procedure based on some assumed statistical distribution, but to make an ansatz for possible RG transformations and to pos...

An Assessment of Renormalization Methods in the Statistical Theory of Isotropic Turbulence

For the latter half of the last century renormalization methods have played an important part in tackling problems in fundamental physics and in providing a deeper understanding of systems with many interacting scales or degrees of freedom with strong coupling. The study of turbulence is no exception, and this thesis presents an investigation of renormalization techniques available in the study...

New applications of the renormalization group method in physics: a brief introduction.

The renormalization group (RG) method developed by Ken Wilson more than four decades ago has revolutionized the way we think about problems involving a broad range of energy scales such as phase transitions, turbulence, continuum limits and bifurcations in dynamical systems. The Theme Issue provides articles reviewing recent progress made using the RG method in atomic, condensed matter, nuclear...
